PREPARATION FOR THE OPEN SEA SWIMMING

The Mombasa Triathlon team set out to test the open water with the young athletes who managed to cross the channel for the first time.

After a long swimming pool training, it was time for the club to test the seas. Even though it was the first time to most all the athletes, everyone managed to cross the Fort Jesus channel which is approximately 400m wide. The team met at Treasury Square and had a warm-up cycling session then followed by the ocean swim. On standby with the rescue boat, Mr . Gianni Sganzerla who is an active triathlete and also a father of a rising star in triathlon was there to ensure all is well. The team took 15 minutes to cross the channel to the other side.

When reaching the other side, all were happy and were encouraged to do it again. Mr. Gianni took the team for a boat ride to encourage the young athletes after the swim session.

The team is having training sessions with athletes every Monday, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays with the advanced athletes while the entry level is on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Mombasa Triathlon has a line up of events leading to the Cycling race slated for 18th September followed by the Open Sea Swimming Gala on the 9th October at Fort Jesus. The King of the Mountains in Kwale is set on the 6th of November and finally with a triathlon race on the 19th of November at the Oshwal Academy. The athletes will then fly to Mauritius where real competition is expected from athletes from Re-Union Islands, South Africa, Mauritian and others of the kid’s category. This is an event where the athletes get the split time results unlike the other triathlons where kids only do it for fun.  The Mombasa Triathlon is also preparing for the Triathlon event that will be organized on the 17th September 2011.

So far, the series of races has been well received and the prize pool also is getting bigger.

FRIENDLY AQUATHLON A GREAT SUCCESS!

“The Inaugural Inter schools Aquathlon Championships organised at the Oshwal Academy Mombasa Campus was a great success”, reports Suleiman Said who is currently the chairman of Kenya Triathlon Association and a swimming coach at Oshwal Academy Mombasa. For the first time, OAM who were the hosts had a chance to meet Jaffery Academy in the first ever event that brought together over seventy- six contestants from the two schools.

The OAM students waited with much anticipation for the event to start and as the Jeffery athletes arrived, a sense of anxiety swept across the students as was evidenced by the look on the athletes face. Anxious parents were also there, waiting to see the triathlon champions give out a test run for the first timers, Oshwal Academy Amphibious Aquathlon team.

Jaffery Academy is known for its domination in any triathlon- related activity. Their history dates back to 2001, when they first registered for these activities and since then, there has been no looking back on the sport.

Oshwal Academy through their coach, Suleiman Said is currently working on plans to have OAM as one of the best swimming teams in the region. Delta airline's maiden flight is using a Boeing 757-300ER, with a 221 seats capacity, and will eventually be flying over 800 travellers per week from Atlanta to Nairobi.
There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at the airport to officially launch direct flights from Nairobi to Atlanta . The ceremony will be graced by Prime Minister Hon. American travellers to Kenya will now fly to Nairobi without the hassle of going through the European capitals where it takes over 30 hours and has remained a major deterrent for tourism from the US.
With the direct flight from Atlanta , this will be reduced to only 12 hours.
Earlier this year Minister Balala and the management of Delta Airlines, one of the biggest airlines in USA , reached a partnership to promote Kenya tourism in America ahead of the inaugural flight.
According to the Senior Marketing and Communication Manager of the airline Ms. Jeanne Wilson who met with the Minister at the airline's headquarters in Atlanta , Delta has the largest frequent flier database in the world that could be reached through its well-established marketing channels.
The Minister observed that the Delta Airline flights will be a big boost to the tourism sector in Kenya which is yet to attain full recovery from the effect of last years post election crisis.
"The direct air connection between the US and Nairobi and the election of President Barrack Obama is the best opportunity we have ever had to reach the huge potential of the American tourism market", said the Minister.
During his Atlanta visit the Minister also discussed with the president of Legacy Entertainment in Hollywood , Los Angeles Mr. Steven Moore plans to organize trips for US celebrities to come to Kenya for photo shoots.
Further Director of External Affairs and Community Relations, Ms. Scarlet Pressley-Brown said she will organize the travel of Ron Clark Academy students to Nairobi aboard the inaugural flight.
These are students who made performances during the Obama campaign and will provide mileage in promotion of the Delta Airlines flight as well as Kenya as a destination.
The Minister also met with the Kenya Diaspora in Atlanta , who welcomed the move by the Delta Airlines to introduce a direct flight to Nairobi as this will reduce the cost and time of travel to home.
The United States is now the second largest source market for tourist arrivals into Kenya registering 100,516 arrivals in 2007 after UK which recorded 203,494 visitors.

In the men’s event Great Britain swimming ace Richard Stannard set the pace and got out of the water at the steps of the historical Fort Jesus in a group of four that included the 2007 African Triathlon Champion,Hendrik de Villiers, Kent Horner (RSA) and Christiaan Federik from Austria. The chase group consisted of David Bardi (FRA), Mehdi Essadiq (MOR) and Chris Felgate from Zimbabwe.
The seven-lap cycle route had fully closed roads with excellent crowd control and took the athletes through the downtown area, along the golf course and through Treasury square where the main spectator and transition area were. “Complete road closure was amazing – we don’t get that often” was the comment from Kent Horner who cycled with de Villiers, Stannard and Christian Frederik (AUT) in the front group.
The shade of the big trees lining Moi avenue offered little comfort on the five-lap run as the midday heat soared to over 30 degrees celcius and took its toll on the less experienced athletes. An elated de Villiers finished first with Stannard in second position and Horner third.
The event was also the final of the 2007 African Triathlon series that started in February in Langebaan, South Africa and toured Mauritius, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
