| Brilliant Start for Swaleh Balala at the All Africa Triathlon Championships in Durban. |
 |
| Swaleh Balala |
It was an exciting moment for the two young Kenyans at the start line up during the All African Triathlon Champs in Durban. The event took place in South Africa in Durban.
Aliasger Sheikh Quresh, a 14 year old triathlete was out of the sport for 2 years did a great performance in spite of the long leave from the sport. Aliasger had a stiff challenge from athletes who came from South Africa, Mauritius, Re Union Islands and Zimbabwe but managed to come 12th in the 14-15 years category.
Swaleh Balala, a rising star in the Multi-sport of Triathlon set up an amazing start in Triathlon. Swaleh, who is 8 months old in the sport managed to beat the best times set by triathletes in the 2006 /2007 ITU Mombasa African Cup triathlons like the 18/19 years olds 1st position Arnaud Pajaniandy from Mauritius with 01:18:18 while Mujtaba Husseinali Dungersi with 01:20:09 and Masoud Swaleh 01:30:08 with 4th position J-Alexandre Louise from Re Union Islands with 01:40:56. He also beat the times set by the 16/17 years olds set by 1st position Lucas Parmentier from Re Union Islands with 1:19:48 while 2nd position Shaneali Husseinali Dungersi with 01:22:01 while 3rd position was Aakash Kamdar with 1:28:27.
Swaleh who just turned 16years managed to achieve 1:12:09 in the cold and hilly terrain of Durban. He came 20th position out of 24 from the 16 years to 19 years.
“I am satisfied with the performance, he would have done better but the hand injury sustained during the training greatly affected his performance” “It has been a very important occasion for the two young athletes to be side by side with Abraham Lowe from Namibia who is ranked top ten in the World.” We are aiming now for the top and I believe that we shall reach that level in 2 years time.” says Suleiman Said who is an ITU Certified Triathlon Coach in Kenya.
The two young athletes are now in top level training program which will take them to the YULs Aquadrom Cross Triathlon which is a very important race for all Kenyan triathletes. YULs Aquadrom Triathlon is a unique event from all the rest of Triathlons on the Kenyan soil.
It will be the 1st event which will be used to select Kenyan team for Mauritius in December 2009.
The athletes are working hard to see that during the ITU Mombasa African Cup set for 21/22 November at Coast Academy and Old Town, the Visiting athletes will face a tough challenge from our triathletes.
Finally, the new and exciting Triathlon event taking place in Malindi on 12/13 of December will be the last event for the 2 young athletes in Kenya as they leave the following day for the Mauritius Continental Triathlon on 14th to 27th December 2009.

Hon. Najib Balala-
Minister for Tourism |
In addition, Transport Minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere, Kenya 's Ambassador to the U.S Peter Ogego and former Atlanta Mayor Ambassador Andrew Young will be on board the flight.
American travellers to Kenya will now fly to Nairobi without the hassle of going through the European capitals where it takes over 30 hours and has remained a major deterrent for tourism from the US.
With the direct flight from Atlanta , this will be reduced to only 12 hours.
Earlier this year Minister Balala and the management of Delta Airlines, one of the biggest airlines in USA , reached a partnership to promote Kenya tourism in America ahead of the inaugural flight.
According to the Senior Marketing and Communication Manager of the airline Ms. Jeanne Wilson who met with the Minister at the airline's headquarters in Atlanta , Delta has the largest frequent flier database in the world that could be reached through its well-established marketing channels.
The Minister observed that the Delta Airline flights will be a big boost to the tourism sector in Kenya which is yet to attain full recovery from the effect of last years post election crisis.
"The direct air connection between the US and Nairobi and the election of President Barrack Obama is the best opportunity we have ever had to reach the huge potential of the American tourism market", said the Minister.
During his Atlanta visit the Minister also discussed with the president of Legacy Entertainment in Hollywood , Los Angeles Mr. Steven Moore plans to organize trips for US celebrities to come to Kenya for photo shoots.
Further Director of External Affairs and Community Relations, Ms. Scarlet Pressley-Brown said she will organize the travel of Ron Clark Academy students to Nairobi aboard the inaugural flight.
These are students who made performances during the Obama campaign and will provide mileage in promotion of the Delta Airlines flight as well as Kenya as a destination.
The Minister also met with the Kenya Diaspora in Atlanta , who welcomed the move by the Delta Airlines to introduce a direct flight to Nairobi as this will reduce the cost and time of travel to home.
The United States is now the second largest source market for tourist arrivals into Kenya registering 100,516 arrivals in 2007 after UK which recorded 203,494 visitors.

Davies and de Villiers win in Mombasa (November 19, 2007 )
|
Hendrik de Villiers from South Africa and Emma Davies from Ireland won the ITU Mombasa African Cup event on Sunday 18 November in hot and humid conditions on the African East Coast.
Emma Davies led the Elite women’s event from start to finish and performed well in the warm weather conditions after spending a week on the Kenyan coast to acclimatize to the local conditions. She exited the water in the first position and cycled the seven-lap route though downtown Mombasa on her own with Juliana Batizy-Morley (USA) and Fabienne St Louis (MRI) in hot pursuit. She started the run with a comfortable cushion and was cheered on by the appreciative local spectators lining the route. She said that it was “an amazing experience to come to Kenya and race right in the centre of Mombasa”
In the men’s event Great Britain swimming ace Richard Stannard set the pace and got out of the water at the steps of the historical Fort Jesus in a group of four that included the 2007 African Triathlon Champion,Hendrik de Villiers, Kent Horner (RSA) and Christiaan Federik from Austria. The chase group consisted of David Bardi (FRA), Mehdi Essadiq (MOR) and Chris Felgate from Zimbabwe.
The seven-lap cycle route had fully closed roads with excellent crowd control and took the athletes through the downtown area, along the golf course and through Treasury square where the main spectator and transition area were. “Complete road closure was amazing – we don’t get that often” was the comment from Kent Horner who cycled with de Villiers, Stannard and Christian Frederik (AUT) in the front group.
The shade of the big trees lining Moi avenue offered little comfort on the five-lap run as the midday heat soared to over 30 degrees celcius and took its toll on the less experienced athletes. An elated de Villiers finished first with Stannard in second position and Horner third.
The event was also the final of the 2007 African Triathlon series that started in February in Langebaan, South Africa and toured Mauritius, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
